Shane in Cork Opera House

photo1On March 19th at the Cork Opera House, Shane Supple took to the stage and opened the show for Max T Barnes. Shane with his good friend Padraig Parker performed an acoustic set for almost 30 minutes. He sang all his own songs starting with Story Book Romance. He followed this up with Dance the last Dance, Lifetime Guarantee and then he took a break from his own songs and sang I want you to want me in response to several requests from some of his fans who had seen the video on YouTube.  He rounded off the set with a song he had composed for the night called What Willie Nelson Said to Me.

Lyrics are below and more or less tells the story that Shane says was inspired by comments on his facebook page from his friends, Cork songwriter Cormac O’Caoimh and Fermoy based songwriter Willie O Keeffe. Willie telling hime to knock em dead and Cormac adding the break a leg part (Customary good wishes to a preformer before they go on stage) So Shane wrote the song based on having a dream before the concert at the Opera House, in his dream Willie Nelson came to Shane and told him to knock em dead and break a leg. So Shane put the words to music and sang it for the first time live on stage. Padraig only heard the song the evening of the gig and as always he fell in on guitar keeping Shane in line.

It has to be said that Shane looked quite relaxed and comfortable on stage and he had a great time telling the audience the story behind each song and everyone enjoyed the set.

Also on stage were local singer songwriter Michelle Cotter another frined of Shanes and of course the legend that is Max T Barnes who was joined by Craig T Curtis on stage for his set. Max sang some of his standards and some of the no 1 hits he has had with his songs.

Have a listen to a rough clip of the song here What Willie Nelson Said To Me with the words below.

What Willie Nelson said – words & music Shane Supple

Chorus
Knock em dead, break a leg. That’s what Willie Nelson said to me “In my head”
The night we took to the opera stage, my friend Padraig said What Willie said, that’s what he said
So tonight Im gonna knock em dead.Do my best like Willie said
Sing my songs till I’m out of breath.Got all night long to impress, the best

Verse 1
I stood on stage and started to sing. All the songs that I could bring to them
The lights were down the music was loud. I was standing tall and proud
But all the ghosts of music past, Couldn’t make that feeling last
I thought back to what he said, the words kept ringing around my head

Chorus
Knock em dead, break a leg. That’s what Willie Nelson said to me “In my head”
The night we took to the opera stage, my friend Padraig said What Willie said, that’s what he said
So tonight Im gonna knock em dead.Do my best like Willie said
Sing my songs till I’m out of breath. Got all night long to impress, the best

Verse 2
I played some more, sang twice as loud. All the songs to make Willie proud
I broke a string but I kept on playing when the set was done they were all singing
I was standing there all alone just me and that big microphone
I thought of Willie and what he said the words kept ringing in my head again
